The City of the Arts and the Sciences is an architectural, cultural complex and of entertainment of the city of Valencia
The complex designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela, was inaugurated on April 16, 1998 by L'Hemisfèric's opening.
It is a space for leisure activities where culture and scientific activities take the leading role, somewhere to learn and have fun at the same time that bases its activities on three major themes: Art, Science and Nature, three pillars of human knowledge at the service of all.
The City of the Arts and the Sciences is placed at the end of the old riverbed of the Turia River, riverbed that turned into garden into the year 1980, after the detour of the river by the great flood of Valencia in the year 1957. It constitutes, nowadays, the major tourist claim of the city of Valencia.
First, we will visit the Oceanographic; the Oceanographic is divided in different parts such as Artic, Antarctic, Mediterranean, Oceans and Dolphinarium.
It is the biggest aquarium of Europe. It cover in the shape of nenuphar is a work of the architect Félix Candela. Bigger Europe treats itself about the oceanographic with 110.000 square meters and 42 million litres of water.
L’Hemisferic has form similar to an eye. The Museum of the Sciences Principe Felipe, with form similar to the skeleton of a dinosaur, it is an interactive museum of science. It occupies 40.000 m ² distributed in three floors.
L'Umbracle: walk landscaped with vegetable autochthonous species of the Valencian Community (rockrose, lentisca, rosemary, lavender, honeysuckle, buganvilla, palms...) covered by floating arches from where it is possible to see the whole complex of the City of the Arts and the Sciences. It shelters in its interior The Walk of the Sculptures, a gallery of art outdoors with sculptures of contemporary authors. (Miguel Navarro, Francesco Abad, Yoko Ono and others ...)
L'Assut de l'Or's Bridge that the south round communicates with Menorca Street, and whose pylons of 125 meters of height are the highest point of the city.
