Leaving Alicante, the charming capital of the province behind, the route is firstly goes along the coast as far as Benidorm, one of Europe’s favourite holiday playgrounds (panoramic views), then into the hinterland where irrigated farmland gives way to more austere mountain scenery en route to the former Moorish stronghold of Guadalest.
Taste the delicious, locally produced moscatel wine or freshly pressed orange juice at the photo stop on outskirts of Guadalest.
A guided tour through the cobbled streets of this fairy tale village, founded during the moorish invasion of the 9th century is a pleasure not to be missed.
Perched on a rocky outcrop dominating the surrounding slopes, planted with almond and olive trees, magnificent views and photo opportunities around. In the upper village, reached through a tunnel extracted out of solid rock, visit the tastefully restored “House of the Orduñas” (the former overlords of the valley) before taking the spiralling steps to the ruined castle. In the village square visit the 12th century dungeon and admire the wonderful mountain scenery.
There is ample free time to browse (or shop till you drop!) in the myriad shops stocked with every type of local handmade work – ceramics, lace, carved olive wood, tapestries, Lladró porcelain – the list is almost endless.
Return to the Port or Hotel.
