The core of the city is its “Plaza Mayor”, chaired by the equestrian statue of Pizarro, equal to the one at Lima (Peru), both works of the north American sculptor Ramsey and his wife Mary Harriman. In Plaza Mayor you will see first the front of Saint Martin’s Church.
In the background among the Church and the statue of Pizarro is Vargas-Carvajal Palace of which the magnificent balcony and the beautiful portico can be highlighted, inside there are also two parts of great value: a Renaissance courtyard of the 16th Century and the grand staircase, 17th Century work. Actually it is a nun of closing convent, but can be visited.
Piedras Albas Palace, surmounted by a gothic Ridge appears in the opposite corner of the square.
The most important building of the square is the Palace of “Marques de la Conquista”, Francisco Pizarro. It has a rich plateresque decoration which ascends framing the balcony and culminates with the Heraldry that Charles V granted to the Emperor of Peru.
“Santa María La Mayor” temple is the oldest of Trujillo, romanesque 13th Century originated and transformed into gothic during the 15th and 16th centuries.
Designed by Sáncho Cabrera and Francisco Becerra architects, both from Trujillo. It has two towers, a 13th Century with three bodies of bells and 16th Century with three great doors and gothic arches.
The interior is form by three naves with groined vaults and cruciform pillars.
The altarpiece of great artistic value consists of 25 tables painted by Fernando Gallego.
